Working in the Slums of Nairobi

There are approximatly 2.5 million slum dwellers in about 200 settlements in Nairobi representing 60% of the Nairobi population and occupying just 6% of the land

WayMaker is working with our in-country partners based in the Kawangware slum where most inhabitants live on less than $2 a day, and unemployment is extremely high.

Kawangware has a scarcity of safe drinking water and few have running water. There is water supplied by the city authority, but it is not available every day, the alternative is to buy water from traders but it’s expensive.

There are waterborne diseases, respiratory pneumonia, and malaria as well as an increase in cases of airborne diseases due to the poor sewerage system in Kawangware. Many people in Kawangware are HIV-positive.

Making A Way

WayMaker works with a tried and trusted partner in Kawangware, and together, we have helped the poor, made a way where there was no way for many and, more recently, in 2024, have provided disaster relief funds for the many in Nairobi who were devastated by the floods.
