Sponsor a Child in to School?

On 24 June 2026, two major earthquakes struck Venezuela in rapid succession. The strongest impacts were felt in La Guaira and Greater Caracas, where families have faced the loss of loved ones, damaged homes, displacement and continuing uncertainty. Children are among those most vulnerable in the aftermath of this emergency. This BBC News article describes the situation and tells the story of one survivor who lost his wife and two young sons in the tragedy.

Through this appeal, we are raising funds for Hogar Bambi Venezuela, with a particular focus on adapting and preparing Bambi III, an existing home that will enable the charity to respond to the sharp increase in the number of vulnerable children and young people needing safety, care and protection.

Johan, a Venezuelan member of our church family, shared this reflection:

The Bible tells the story of Jesus weeping at the death of his friend Lazarus. It can seem a puzzling story because Jesus knew he was about to bring Lazarus back to life. So why did He weep? I believe He was weeping over the devastating impact that death has on those who are left behind, over its incredible ability to inflict pain. When I saw the news about the earthquake, I cried - more than once, and over several days. It was hard to hold back the tears whenever I thought about it. In one day, thousands of people lost their lives, and the ones that survived were left with dead relatives, no homes, and with having to start over from scratch in a country that has been plagued with much instability over decades.

It is hard to grasp the level of suffering that these people are currently experiencing When this sort of tragedy occurs, we are filled with emotions and have an urge to help, we can see the pain in the suffering as we live the events via the news coverage. But after one or two weeks the news feed slows, the articles are less regular, and they are quickly replaced with other news. However, the situation for the survivors in Venezuela remains the same; their pain has not eased, and their circumstances have not significantly changed.

That is why we are launching this appeal.

Through this appeal, we are raising funds for Hogar Bambi Venezuela, with a particular focus on adapting and preparing Bambi III—an existing home that will enable the charity to respond to the sharp increase in the number of vulnerable children and young people needing safety, care and protection.

Since the earthquakes, the Hogar Bambi team has mobilised its resources to:

• operate a collection centre.

• distribute essential supplies and logistical support to affected families and rescue workers.

• visit temporary shelters to identify children who may be unaccompanied or at risk.

• provide psychological and emotional support to children and their families.

The principal focus of this appeal is the preparation and conditioning of Bambi III.

This facility will provide additional capacity for Hogar Bambi to welcome children and young people affected by the emergency. Funds raised will help transform Bambi III into a safe, suitable and caring home, ready to receive those who urgently need protection.

As Johan writes;

We want to have an impact on as many lives as possible, particularly on the most vulnerable. By supporting Hogar Bambi, we can help them continue their work and strengthen their ability to respond to emergencies like this, easing some of the suffering experienced by children who have survived such unimaginable loss.

This appeal is not simply about preparing a building. It is about creating a place where a child who has experienced loss, displacement or trauma can feel safe again - a place with caring adults, essential provisions and the stability needed to begin recovering.
